A team of scientists from SEGEMAR, along with a CONICET researcher from the Bernardino Rivadavia Argentine Museum of Natural Sciences, is conducting studies in the Argentine Antarctic sector. Their research focuses on the South Shetland Archipelago, specifically south of 25 de Mayo Island. The investigations are primarily based at Poland’s Henryk Arctowski Station, with plans to later replicate the scientific and technical studies at Argentina’s Carlini Station.
This collaboration is part of a memorandum of understanding (Specific Agreement No. 1) signed between the Polish Geological Institute (PGI) of the National Research Institute of Poland and the Argentine Geological Mining Service (SEGEMAR). The primary goal of this mission is to foster scientific and technical cooperation in geophysical and geological surveying of the terrain south of 25 de Mayo Island, as part of the Geological Mapping Survey of the Argentine Antarctic.
To date, various geophysical measurements have been carried out, including magnetometry and gravimetry, supported by geodetic studies and the collection of fossil materials from the region’s Cretaceous outcrops. Geological sampling has also been conducted in the area. Scientists from both countries have held several meetings to exchange knowledge on methodological criteria, dating techniques, and technological applications.
Beyond its scientific and technical significance, this mission, which will continue until early March 2025, highlights the strong cooperation between Argentine institutions and the commitment to international collaboration between Argentina and Poland in Antarctic research.
