The mayor of General Pueyrredón, Guillermo Montenegro, has announced an innovative measure that will benefit residents and tourists: the installation of free internet in General San Martín Park. This service will be provided by Starlink, the satellite internet company owned by magnate Elon Musk.
A More Connected Park for Everyone
The implementation of this WiFi network is part of a series of public space revitalization works with private investment. “Starting in March, the WiFi in San Martín Park will be from Starlink. And all the works you see in the video were done with sponsorship from Cabrales,” announced Mayor Montenegro on the social network X.
Additionally, the mayor emphasized that this project is part of an urban development model that promotes private investment for the benefit of public spaces, thus improving citizens’ quality of life without compromising municipal funds.
Expansion to Other Public Spaces
General San Martín Park will be the first to benefit from this initiative, but not the only one. In the future, other green areas and plazas in the city of Mar del Plata will also have free connectivity through Starlink. This initiative aims to promote public space use and facilitate internet access for everyone, regardless of location or economic resources.
How Much Does Starlink Service Cost?
While internet access in General San Martín Park will be free, those who wish to have Starlink service at home or for business will need to pay for the hardware and monthly plans.
- Equipment cost: $249,000 (mini version) one-time payment.
- Residential plans:
- Residential Lite: $38,000/month.
- Standard Residential: $56,000/month.
- Itinerant plans (for nomads and mobile homes):
- 50 Gb: $63,000/month.
- Unlimited: $87,500/month.
- Mobile Priority 50 Gb: $431,250/month.
- Business plans:
- Ranging from 40 Gb to 2 Tb, with prices from $96,800 to $8,625,000 per month.
These costs vary depending on data capacity and mobility requirements, offering options for different types of users, from households to large businesses.
Easy and Quick Installation
One of Starlink’s advantages is its ease of installation. According to the company, only two steps are required: connect the device and point it toward the sky. With the official Starlink app, users can determine the best location to ensure a stable, interference-free connection.
A Development Model for the Future
With this measure, Mar del Plata reinforces its commitment to modernization and technological accessibility, offering a key service for tourism, education, and remote work. The implementation of free internet in public spaces is a step towards a more connected and inclusive city, leveraging private investment to improve residents’ quality of life.
This initiative, driven by Guillermo Montenegro’s administration, represents a trend that could be replicated in other Argentine cities, demonstrating that collaboration between the public and private sectors can generate great benefits for the community.
